Model: ChatGPT · Sites

ChatGPT Sites is a publishing feature that lets you turn work or ideas into an interactive website or lightweight app without leaving ChatGPT. OpenAI opened it in public beta on 9 July 2026, and it matters because AI-built pages are becoming a new layer of the web your brand has to compete with to be seen.

TL;DR
  • On 9 July 2026, OpenAI opened ChatGPT Sites in public beta — build an interactive website or lightweight app and publish it to a public URL without leaving ChatGPT.
  • It rolls out to Pro, Pro Lite and Edu users, with Plus following; it is not on Free or Go, and Enterprise public publishing is admin-gated and off by default.
  • Public publishing is not available in the UK, EEA or Switzerland at launch, so UK brands should plan around that gap.
  • Sites is built from the content, files and links you feed it — the same sources-in, answer-out logic that decides which brands AI names.
  • This is a new publishing surface to watch: more of the web is now AI-built, which raises the bar for the human-made pages that still earn citations.

What OpenAI actually launched

On 9 July 2026, OpenAI opened ChatGPT Sites in public beta. In OpenAI’s own words, Sites “lets you turn your work or ideas into an interactive website or lightweight app without leaving ChatGPT.” You can build dashboards, project trackers, launch calendars, prototypes, internal portals and reports, then preview and refine the result with ChatGPT before sharing it.

Business and Enterprise customers already had Sites. The news is that they can now publish them publicly and share them with anyone through a URL, and that the feature is rolling out in public beta to more paid plans. It landed the same day as ChatGPT Work and a new unified desktop app — part of a clear shift from ChatGPT as a place you ask questions to a place that builds and ships finished things.

Why AI-built pages matter

Every published Site is a new web page — generated by AI, hosted in OpenAI’s ecosystem and reachable by a URL. As tools like this scale, the open web fills with pages built by a model rather than written by a person, and that changes the competitive landscape for whether your own content gets found and reused.

The brands that get named in AI answers are the ones with clear, current, well-structured content a model can read and trust — the logic behind how LLMs decide which brands to cite. When more of the web is AI-built filler, distinctive first-party content stands out more, not less — a point we keep making in is your brand ready for AI search?

How ChatGPT Sites get created

To create a Site, you start in ChatGPT Work on the web, or in Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app. You describe what you want to build, add any relevant content, files, data, links or constraints, and review a private preview before publishing.

That workflow matters because the links and content you feed in are the sources the Site is built from. The same discipline that governs text answers applies here: the pages a model trusts feed straight into what it produces — the pattern we traced through Google preferred sources for AI Overviews and the groundwork in building a GEO strategy. Thin or outdated pages get built around; clear ones get built in.

Where these sites can be published

Publishing depends on your plan and workspace. Sites is rolling out in public beta to Pro, Pro Lite and Edu users, with Plus users following over the coming days; it is not available on Free or Go plans. In Enterprise workspaces, public publishing is off by default and must be enabled by an admin.

Public sharing is the visibility hook. Once a Site is published to a URL, it can be shared with anyone — no ChatGPT account required to view it. That turns a private preview into a public web property, the same “new surface” logic we applied to ChatGPT Voice and Claude in Microsoft 365 Copilot.

What it means when AI builds the web

When the platform that answers questions also hosts the pages, you get a tighter loop between content and answer. OpenAI does not say published Sites feed back into ChatGPT’s answers, and you should not assume they do — but a growing library of AI-built, URL-addressable pages is exactly the kind of surface worth watching as it matures.

The broader signal is that publishing is getting cheaper and faster for everyone, including your competitors. Perplexity’s Deep Research upgrade and Claude Sonnet 5 point the same way: more content, produced faster, raising the bar for the human-made pages that still earn a citation — and rewarding the memory and source signals we covered in ChatGPT memory sources.

Why the UK rollout gap matters

For UK readers there is an important caveat. OpenAI states that “public publishing and the expanded beta rollout are not available in the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom at launch.” So while the feature exists, UK users cannot publish public Sites on day one.

Regional gating is now a permanent feature of AI rollouts, and it shapes what any given user — or any buyer researching you — can actually do. We have tracked the same pattern with the ChatGPT Ads Manager beta and in how geopolitical events reshape AI visibility. Treat the UK availability date, not the global launch date, as your real start line.

What the launch means for brands

On its own, a website builder inside ChatGPT is not a visibility event. What makes it worth logging is the direction: OpenAI is turning ChatGPT into a place where work is researched, built and published end to end. Each of those steps is a new place your brand is either present or absent.

We have watched that expansion release after release — from the retirement of GPT-4.5 to the GPT-5.5 Instant Mini fallback swap and the agent surface in ChatGPT Work. Sites is the publishing end of the same story. If your only measure of AI presence is a typed chat answer, the surfaces that now matter are multiplying faster than that single check — or a one-off look at the model picker — can keep up with.

How to check your Sites exposure

Agent-built pages are easy to overlook because you have to create one to see how it works. Here is a short, practical way to find out what ChatGPT Sites does with your category:

  1. Build one yourself. On an eligible plan, ask ChatGPT to create a Site about your category and note which brands and sources it pulls in.
  2. Check the sources. Ask which links and pages fed the build — those are the places worth earning a mention.
  3. Watch for AI-built competitors. Search your category for thin, templated pages; they signal where AI-generated content is crowding your space.
  4. Confirm your region. If you are in the UK or EEA, public publishing is not live yet — plan for when it is.
  5. Compare against chat. Run the same brief as a plain ChatGPT question and as a Site to see how the format changes which brands appear.
  6. Re-check as it widens. The beta is rolling out gradually, so one look is a snapshot — the value is in the trend.

How reconnAI tracks new surfaces

reconnAI monitors how the leading AI models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overview — answer questions across regions, and re-baselines that tracking whenever a platform changes how its answers are generated or published. A feature that lets AI build and publish web pages is exactly the kind of shift that can change what shows up around your brand.

When did ChatGPT Sites launch? OpenAI opened the public beta on 9 July 2026, per the ChatGPT release notes, alongside ChatGPT Work and a new unified desktop app.

Who can use ChatGPT Sites? It is rolling out to Pro, Pro Lite and Edu users, with Plus following over the coming days. It is not available on Free or Go plans, and in Enterprise workspaces public publishing is off by default until an admin enables it.

Is ChatGPT Sites available in the UK? The build feature is rolling out, but OpenAI says public publishing and the expanded beta are not available in the United Kingdom, the EEA or Switzerland at launch, so UK users cannot publish public Sites on day one.

Does ChatGPT Sites affect how my brand appears in AI answers? Indirectly, yes. Sites is built from the content and links you provide, and it adds to a growing layer of AI-built web pages — both of which shape which sources stand out and get cited. Running your own brief through it is the way to tell.
