How often do AI answers go local?
Every day we ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot the same questions and check every answer for towns and cities. This tracker shows how often the answer names the place the question was asked from, when the question itself never mentions it.

What it means
Answers assume where you are
The same question gets a different answer depending on where it is asked from. In our tracking, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT now point to the user’s own area far more often than at the start of the year.
Local visibility is its own race
Being named nationally is not the same as being named nearby. For a business that sells locally, what counts is whether AI names you when someone in your area asks.
Some engines barely localise
Engines differ a lot. Some rarely mention the user’s location at all, so the answer your customer sees depends on which assistant they use as much as on where they are.
How we measure it
Every day reconnAI collects thousands of answers from five AI assistants, asked from two locations. Each answer is checked against a list of 88 cities and large towns. A place only counts when the answer names it and the question did not.
User’s location is the share of answers that name the town or city the question was asked from. Typical city is the average share for 21 other large cities: the baseline for how often a city comes up anyway.
Figures are weekly. An engine’s week is left out when it has fewer than 100 answers. The questions are real buyer questions our customers track, so the mix shifts as tracking grows. The data updates every night.
