On 22 April 2026, OpenAI began rolling out Fast Answers in ChatGPT - a triage layer that bypasses memory and past chats to deliver quicker responses to high-confidence factual questions. It is a small product tweak with a large consequence for brands: a new answer pathway where personalisation is out of the equation and citations get tighter.

What OpenAI actually changed
Fast Answers is live on Web, iOS and Android for every ChatGPT user - logged-in and logged-out, Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education. When ChatGPT classifies a prompt as a straightforward informational query - for example "Show me the Seven Wonders of the World" or "Which football team has the most Super Bowl titles?" - and has a high-confidence answer available, the response is delivered through a shortcut pipeline rather than the full conversational flow.
The consequential detail is in OpenAI's own wording: "Fast answers do not reference your past chats or memory." Personalisation is deliberately set aside for speed. Users who prefer personalised responses on every prompt can disable the feature from Personalization settings.
How Fast Answers decides when to fire
The shortcut triggers on two simultaneous conditions:
Classification. The question does not require personalised context. Short, factual, encyclopedic-style prompts qualify; open-ended, comparative or nuanced prompts do not.
Confidence. ChatGPT has a high-confidence canonical answer already available. Low-confidence or contested questions still take the full reasoning path.
In practice, prompts like "capital of Peru", "tallest building in Dubai" or "who founded Intel" go down the fast path. Prompts like "recommend a CRM for a 20-person SaaS team" or "compare Stripe and Adyen for European marketplaces" still trigger the full model response, including memory and past conversation context.
Why this matters for AI visibility
For brands tracking how they appear inside ChatGPT, Fast Answers changes three things at once:
Memory is removed from the equation. If your brand was previously surfacing because a user had discussed you earlier in the conversation, that route is closed on fact-style prompts. Visibility now has to be earned by the underlying model weights and the retrieval layer - not by conversational priming.
The answer set gets narrower. High-confidence responses tend to be shorter and more canonical. Brands that occasionally surfaced as a secondary example may be pruned when ChatGPT decides a single-source answer is enough.
Latency pressure favours concise sources. The pipeline is tuned for speed, which puts a premium on authoritative, easily-parsed pages. Long-winded content that buries the fact under marketing copy is less likely to be the citation chosen.
Citation and source behaviour
Our early observations suggest Fast Answers still produces citations when a query has a clear factual source, but the citation set is smaller and more predictable. Encyclopaedic domains, government sites and the highest-authority commercial pages dominate. Niche blogs and mid-tier brand pages that previously slipped into longer responses appear less often.
For factual queries inside your category - "best encrypted messaging app", "cheapest EV in the UK", "how many users does X have" - the Fast Answers pathway can cut the number of brands cited from three or four down to one or two. If you were the third-ranked mention on the long path, there is a real chance you are no longer mentioned at all on the fast path.
Who gains and who loses ground
Likely winners. Category leaders with strong Wikipedia, Wikidata and mainstream press coverage. Brands whose name is the default answer to a factual question. Publishers who structure pages with answer-first paragraphs and clear schema markup.
Likely losers. Challenger brands that relied on personalised context or chat memory to surface. Companies whose visibility strategy depends on being mentioned alongside leaders as "also consider". Sites where the answer is buried several paragraphs into the page.
What this means for AI visibility tracking

Watch volatility on short prompts. Expect more stable, canonical responses - and a narrower shortlist of cited brands on fact-style queries.
Compare logged-in vs logged-out visibility. With memory out of the picture for Fast Answers, the gap between anonymous and personalised responses should shrink on factual queries, but remain meaningful elsewhere.

Tighten your answer-first content. Every category-defining page on your site should have the core fact in the first sentence, followed by schema markup (FAQ, HowTo, Organisation) where relevant.
